In this section Peter ( the main character) explains how he feels about the Frank girls, annoying and loud. He and his family have to go into hiding with the Franks.
He does not want to go into hiding with the Franks, he wants to be with Liese, but by the time he gets to her house it is too late. She and her family are taken from their house by Nazi's because she was called up. That's also another reason the Franks go into hiding, Margot got called up. Everyone in the Annex acted like everything was normal, but to Peter it is not...

In this section Peter is haunted in his dreams by Liese. He wonders if they are looking at the same star, looking at the moon at the same time. All he wants to do is sleep and stay in bed. He wants nothing to do with anyone in the Annex. If he cannot fight why do anything? He finally gets up and helps make an entrance for the Secret Annex.. a book case. The people who they all rely on to bring them food, drink, and books will use this entrance. Peter doesn't see the point of the books if no one is going read them except the Frank girls. He wants to be a carpenter and he is sure there are no books about carpentry. However, he takes a handfull of books up to the attic and reads.

In this section Miep ( one of the people who takes care of the families in the Annex) must make a very difficult decision.... let one little old lady in the Annex and have everybody found and maybe killed on the spot or reject her request. Also Peter and Anne start arguing, but eventually find something that both of them find interesting, dress-up. Peter dresses up as a girl while Anne acts as a man and introduces the "new" Peter to everyone. They all find it funny. However, Peter is scared that they will be caught, scared that they are trapped, scared that he is a coward. The word outside, how could such a small word mean so much to him?

In this section Peter's home is cleared. Everything they owned and left behind is gone. How can Peter or his father tell Mutti that all the things that were made, bought, or given to them as gifts are now gone. Every week everyone has to be weighed. Peter has lost eight pounds in one week, while Anne as gained 19 pounds in three months. Peter doesn't believe her but when he looks at her, she has. Her shape is changing. Peter's birthday has arrived, November 8 and he is now 16. He gets a board game, a razor, a cigarette lighter and two cigarettes. There is a 8th person in the Annex now, Dr.Pfeffer. Hanukkah is right around the corner and Peter's family had no menorah. Peter had to make one.
Hanukkah- Jewish holiday celebrated 8 days and night.

In this section Hanukkah takes place for the first time in the Annex. On the first night of Hanukkah Peter gives his mom the menorah he made. Each night after the Franks go down, Peter and his family light a candle. They each say a prayer. Peter says a prayer for everyone in the Annex. What else can he do? A while after Hanukkah is over, they find out that Turkey has joined the war. A few days after that while Peter is playing with a cat that lives in the building he hears pounding on the door that is the entrance to that particular room. Questions start running through his head. What is that? Did they hear me? Do they know I'm here? Was I quiet enough? Later that month Peter is in the attic and Margot joins him ( Anne's older sister). They chat for a while. Is the sadness and hatred that they feel no better than what the Nazi's are doing? They question if that feeling makes them bad people

In this section it is Hanukkah a year later, which means that they have been in the Annex now for about a year. Peter in now seventeen. Anne, as usual, is getting on everyones nerves especially Peter's. He misses Liese, he wants to dream of her, instead he sees Anne. He sees her odd hair, and her strange look. Anne is also getting everyone's attention, a new year means a new Anne! ( At least thats what she thinks.) One day when Peter and Anne are talking he realizes that she is writing something. Could it be that she is writing the the famous diary of hers that she doesn't let anyone see?

In this section Peter is having difficulties with Mr. Pfeffer. Mr. Pfeffer is always fidgiting and can't hold still. Peter likes to spend time in the attic because there is a small area that the suntlight comes through. One day while he is lying in the sunlight Anne comes in and joins him. They chat for a while about how much they can't stand Mr. Pfeffer. On Febuary 16 is Margot's birthday. Peter gives her a doorstop as a joke. Anne wants to spoil Margot. A day later Anne is telling Peter's mom a story she thought of. After that story is over Anne wants to tell Peter a story and so she does. While she is reading the story to Peter he realizes it is him and her as the main characters. Peter and Anne seem to be getting along just fine now, maybe too fine. Mr. Frank is worried about Anne and Peter, that they are getting to be too close of friends. Mr. Frank and Peter have a talk.

In this section Peter discovers another break-in. His father blames him for leaving the office a mess. Some one could have figured out that they were hiding, but Peter did not leave the mess. The people did, who were looking for information or raiding houses, and buildings. Later on, Peter is remembering the snow before he was stuck in the Annex. He wants to feel the snow on his face again. He wants to throw a snowball. He wishes he could go outside and not worry about being caught. Peter and Anne also begin to get closer. Peter is worried, however, because of the talk that Mr. Frank and him had. Peter is thinking of Anne. He wonders if it is wrong to want to make her smile. Peter soon becomes full of feeling about Anne.

In this section Peter discovers, once again, another break-in! He goes down stairs into the office and hears a couple loud bangs. He realizes a board is missing off the door. Light is shininig though. Peter, Mr. Frank and Peter's father go down stairs to nail the board back up, but the people are still there. Peter and Anne are becoming much closer now. They spend a lot of time in the attic. They talk about outside. Anne is becoming better at being quieter.

He loves to spend time with her in the attic. However, Anne's father is getting worried. He is questioning Peter. He does not want Peter and Anne to spend so much time together in the attic.

Peter is always feeling that he comes second to Anne's diary. On June 6, 1944 the British are bombing along the northern French coast. Everyone thinks that this means the war is going to end soon and they won't be stuck in the Annex anymore. They can all breath fresh air again.

In this section the hope Peter feels is so strong, he worries it's to strong. Anne's birthday is right around the corner and Peter wants to get her something beautiful! When Miep comes he askes her to buy Anne some flowers. June 12 is Anne's birthday and it is here. He gives her the flowers, she loves them. A while later, the eight people in the Annex are soon betrayed. A worker was talking to a policeman. The worker then pointed to the top of the building where they were staying. How could this happen? What's next for us? Where will they take us? These questions were running though Peter's head.

In this section everyone who was in the Annex is now in a concentration camp. They start out at Westerbork. After they were there for awhile, the Nazis sent them off to Auschwitz. They were all forced on a cattle car, with many other people. Mr. Frank told them to stay together no matter what happens.The end is coming. When they got to Auschwitz, almost instanly two men were shot for not doing what they were told quick enough. Everyone who was on the cattle car was seperated. You either go to the left or the right.
Mauthausen- one of the most notrious Nazi concentration camps.
Legion- a huge group of people.
Putrid- decaying or rotting smell.
Theresienstadt- a Nazi concentration camp.
Sobibor- an extermination camp during WWII.

In this section Peter has learned a few tricks to survive... lie, steal, and cheat. Mr. Frank tells Peter to watch the low numbers ( people who have been at the camps longer) and follow their lead. After a test to see if you were strong enough to work, Peter and Mr. Frank passed, but Peter's dad did not. When it was time to eat the the people who did not pass the test were given extra food. One day while everyone was working the people were gathered and killed. Peter knew his father was one of them.
Comrades- a person who shares intrests as another one does.
Anonymity- the quality of being unknown.
Endure- to carry on though, despite all odds.
Barter- to trade goods or services.
Survive- continue to live or exist.

Pages 317- 337
In this section, everyone who has survived so far is forced on a death march. Mr. Frank is trying to convince Peter to stay so he has more of a chance to survive, but Peter will not. Peter left Mr. Frank. While on the death march people drop like flys. There are less and less each day until there are hardly none left. Peter is starved there is no flesh left between his bones. He is the only surviver of the the death march. Will he survive the healing process??
